Banqueting House

from £7 per person

Designed by Inigo Jones in 1619 and previously part of the Palace of Whitehall, the Banqueting House is famously the scene of Charles I’s execution in 1649.

Today it’s preserved as a Grade I listed building. Highlights of visiting the Banqueting house include its beautiful Reubens ceilings and the very scaffold upon which poor Charles met his end!

The House is renowned for its architecture, but is probably most famed as the site of King Charles I’s execution of, which took place on the scaffold just in front of the house.

The Rubens Ceiling: This masterpiece ceiling painting by Peter Paul Rubens is one of the most famous from a golden age. Enjoy them in their original setting, as kings and courtiers have for hundreds of years.

Banqueting House Architecture: The Banqueting House was the first building to be completed in the neo-classical style which marked the start of a revolution in British architecture.

The Undercroft: The Undercroft was originally designed as a drinking den for James I where he could escape the rigors of public life or simply enjoy some private time with his favourite courtiers.

Important:

  • From 1st September 2017 the Banqueting House will no longer be open on Thursdays.
  • Between 22nd February to 18 April 2018inclusive the Banqueting House will not be open to the public due to necessary conservation work to the magnificent Rubens’ ceiling.
