Opera Garnier Tours

from £16 per person

Used as the setting for Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera plus adaptations in films and Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular 1986 musical it’s no wonder the Opera Garnier is considered the most famous Opera House in the world.

Boasting an eclectic and ostentatious Baroque design, the Opera Garnier also known as Palais Garnier is one of the most extravagant representations of Second Empire architecture in France.

In 1860, a contest was launched for the construction of a new opera house in Paris. It was young architect Charles Garnier's project that was unanimously adopted for its exuberant mix of ostentatious and eclectic baroque architecture.

73 sculptors and 14 painters worked on it until its inauguration in January 1875. Measuring 172m in length and 124m in breadth, the Opera Garnier is the largest opera house in Europe. Named after its architect, it has the capacity to welcome more than 2000 people.
